In this week’s edition of In a Vase on Monday I am happy to present flowers from my mid-September garden. Several plants are beginning to rebloom as fall approaches, so some of the blossoms are repeats from earlier submissions.
In the center of the arrangement are new blossoms from the ‘Blushing Bride’ hydrangea, which has supplied blooms for us all summer. It is flanked by Encore azaleas ‘Autumn Carnival’ and ‘Autumn Moonlight’ and Loropetalum ‘Rubra.’ The variegated foliage is Lantana ‘Samantha.’
I particularly like the way the loropetalum blossoms mirror the pink of the azalea. The foliage of the loropetalum and lantana are important elements in the makeup of the arrangement.
The vase is Waterford crystal and the candy dish, filled with glass candy, is an heirloom handed down from my Arranger’s family.

John that vase is a standout both in crystal and flower….The star bloom is that gorgeous hydrangea and the foliage that all works together with the azalea….really beautiful.

Quite lovely John, tasteful and elegant. I’m so fond of hydrangeas and these are gorgeous. Also that Lantana foliage is nice.

That hydrangea is VERY white, so an apt name for it. And I was thrilled to see your Chinese witch hazel, the loropetalum – is this its normal flowering season? Its a plant I am going to look out for as a potential occupant of my new border – a gorgeous pink and those beautiful wispy flowers….. Thanks so much for sharing your vase John and, as usual, to the Arranger for arranging 🙂

Thank you, Cathy. Let me warn you about the ‘Rubra’ loropetalum in a border. In my garden it grows and grows. It would reach 8 x 8 feet or more if I didn’t prune it back. I have already pruned it heavily twice this year…so we can see out a bedroom window. Many in our area prune it into a round shrub or formally as a hedge. If you have a lot of space, it is a great plant.

It is amazing that you can make a vase with flowers from all seasons, picked from the garden – loropetalum, fresh hydrangeas and those Encore azaleas – what a remarkable combination!

Thanks. I love all these reblooming plants which have given gardening another season. I am waiting for my bearded iris to rebloom again this year.
