I was on my way to pick up granddaughter Kate from practice for her school play when I spied these unusual sasanqua camellias. One can see shrubs trimmed into round balls all the time, but this is the first time I have seen camellias pruned into rectangular boxes. Espaliered occasionally, but never boxes. In fact, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen camellias pruned into geometric forms at all. Their natural form is so beautiful.
I know. It’s a free country. One is free to prune as one is led, without worrying about the Garden Police. I guess that’s why my local ice cream parlor has 31 flavors.
