Here we are again at In a Vase on Monday, hosted by fellow blogger Cathy to encourage us to share what might be showing in our garden on this first day of the week. Driving home from church this morning, I was struck with the realization of how quickly the woods have turned from green to yellow and orange and red, seemingly overnight. It must be the cold snap that dropped in on us yesterday. Many maples in our neighborhood are blood red. So foliage is on the mind. My Arranger suggested, since everything that is in bloom right now has appeared in recent offerings, that we limit the arrangement this week to the foliage of some of the plants in our garden. The items selected for this week’s vase typically retain their current color and will provide a visual lift throughout the winter. I hope readers will find the combination a pleasing one.
The arrangement consists of Cupressus x leylandii ‘Golconda,’ Camellia japonica ‘Governor Mouton,’ Euphorbia x martinii ‘Ascot Rainbow,’ Pieris japonica ‘Red Mill,’ Aucuba japonica ‘Mr. Goldstrike,’ and Loropetalum chinense ‘Rubra.’
Both the camellia and the pieris are already showing ample buds that promise a colorful spring.

The blue and white accents are Japanese pottery which we obtained when we lived in Japan.

I really like this arrangement with the red leaves being picked up by the reddish wood of the table. It should last a while too.

Nicely done, John! During our recent heatwaves, I contemplated a foliage only and even a succulent arrangement but fall has brought Southern California cooler weather and my flowers are making a comeback.

Thanks, Elizabeth. As I advance in years, I am trading out plants that require a lot of maintenance (read stoop labor) and putting in more shrubs. It limits the blooms, but there are still some very attractive options.
