Once again we searched the garden for items to include in this week’s In a Vase on Monday, an idea introduced by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden. We have included pansies and violas in earlier offerings, and they are quite beautiful right now. However, we thought we might wait a bit before showing them again. The ‘Debutante’ Camellia japonica is loaded with flowers, but they are all damaged to some degree by the most recent frost. Therefore, I decided to make selections of some the different foliage plants to include in our vase.
Included in the arrangement (back to front) are:
‘Green Giant’ arborvitae
Loropetalum chinense ‘Rubra‘
Cupressocyparis laylandii ‘Golconda’ Leyland cypress
Euonymous japonica ‘Aureo-marginata
The two gold Christmas tree bulbs are included to add a holiday spirit.
My Arranger and I had a debate as to whether this is a vase, a bowl, or a dish. We compromised by calling it a container. What do you think?

What a stunning arrangement. I love the contrasting light and dark colors of the foliage. Very festive. Here the foliage is gone on most bushes but I have a few I can choose from…but nothing as dramatic as yours.

Thanks, Donna. It helps to have some of these plants that keep some color over the winter. Helps to relieve the “blahs.”

Superb arrangement – a lovely combination of colours and texture. The ‘container’ is perfect too. I’m not participating this week but couldn’t resist taking a peek … I can always learn from the experts 🙂

I think any container that holds plant materials is a vase. This is a lovely creation. I think your arranger could go pro.

Lovely. Winter is the time to really appreciate the foliage in the garden and the gold baubles are all you need to make it really festive.

Thanks, Chloris. I can’t take credit for the baubles…my Arranger did it.

i would call it a dish – if it is important to you to have a name, that is! The combination of foliage works really well, and the addition of the bauble is a surprisingly subtle festive touch – you and the arranger make a good team! Thanks for joining in – who knows what we will all find next week 🙂

A beautiful combination of foliage today John and your arranger of course! How are the stems held?

Thanks, Christina. The upright stems are held in a frog; a few shorter are simply laid on the edge but get just enough water to hang on.
