In a Vase on Monday: Bartzella!

The most beautiful flower in my garden right now is the ‘Bartzella’ Itoh peony. The plant, in its third year in the ground and is covered with large (8″/20cm), colorful, attention grabbing blossoms. No plant in the garden has elicited more delightful comments and questions about where to obtain one. I have become a believer; I planted my third Itoh peony this spring and am on the lookout for more.

It cries out to be the star in this week’s In a Vase on Monday offering.

My Arranger suggested that it can stand alone and needs no other flowers to get in the way of admiring ‘Bartzella.’

My thanks to vacationing Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for her invitation to join her in this weekly offering of items from our gardens. Please visit her site and see what she and others have in their vases this week.

I agree with your arranger, it needs nothing else except a beautiful vase, and you have suppied that – lovely.

Thank you, Christina. In my opinion it is an incredible flower. I am much impressed with this new type of peony. I also am growing ‘Keiko’ and ‘Biwa,’ and I am pleased with both of them. I hope to get more.

  3. I quite agree John…it needs no other flowers. I don’t usually see yellow peonies but this one is a standout.

I would encourage you to look into Itoh peonies. They should do well in your area.

      • Yes, John, you are inspiring me with your beautiful photos. I’ve not grown them, but inherited a border of traditional peonies here. I’ll keep my eye out for one 😉 Do you have a particular fondness for yellow flowers?
Am looking forward to what you and the Arranger come up with for tomorrow…. and hope Ana’s rains aren’t causing you any difficulties. Best wishes, WG

She has great taste, doesn’t she? And so do you in planting it – what a superb flower! But the person who called it ‘Bartzella’ should be shot … What are the Itoh peonies? I googled and found them described as ‘intersectional’ – are they herbaceous?

Thanks, Cathy. I have learned about Itoh peonies only in the past few years. Planted Bartzella three years ago, Keiko last year and Biwa this year. They are a cross between a herbaceous and tree peony. Their blooms are large and they stand up when in bloom…don’t need any staking. They are cut down in winter just like their herbaceous parent. I’m looking for more.
