Here we are again on Monday and time for In a Vase on Monday. This week the crape myrtles in my garden are beginning to open and becoming the stars of the garden. What better to include in a vase?
The pink crape myrtle is ‘Tuscarora,’ and the purple one, my favorite, is ‘Catawba.’ We added the blue Hydrangea macrophylla and ‘White Swan’ coneflowers for contrast.
I couldn’t resist putting my “miracle” flowers once again as a sidelight to this week’s offering. Three calla lilies, down from seven originals, are still presentable after six weeks in the vase. They are getting shorter each week as their stems seem to deteriorate from the bottom, but I am amazed these three have survived so long. Has anyone out there had similar experience with cut flowers hanging on for such an extended period?
I am grateful to Cathy at Rambling in the Garden for starting this meme and inviting me to participate with others in displaying what we can bring in from our gardens each week. Please visit her site to see what she and others are doing this week.
Nice rich colors. The purple crape myrtles are among my favorite. Calla lily seems like a must-add garden plant.

Thank you, Susie. I had thought the callas would be long gone by now. It is truly amazing.

Myrtles are not something I have come across here John but if you call them ‘stars’ then they must do well for you and they do look lovely in the vase – I wonder if they are hardy in the UK? Your callas have been amazing and I am not surprised you are still showing them off! Thanks for sharing

Thanks, Cathy. Crape myrtles are hardy here to -17C. I should think that many could survive there. Some might freeze down to the base, but should come back.

I shall look into it, thanks John

Those calla lilies are really something John…and I love the hydrangea with the white coneflower….a great contrast with the pinks!

Thank you, Donna. I continue to be amazed at the callas. I had no idea they would last so long…and they still are today.

Did you really need to be invited? 😀 It is nice seeing your flowers in the vase, I especially love Crepe Myrtle. Don’t gardeners always covet what they can’t grow? I pick weekly and more often after a storm. Yesterday, the glads came inside after they were toppled.

Thanks, Donna. I lost most of my few glads to Japanese beetles and rain/wind.

You and the Arranger can make anything beautiful! What a lovely idea to cut the Crepe Myrtles and use them in a vase. That is the quintessential summer bouquet for this time of year. I had similiar luck with the Callas I cut earlier this summer. They lasted FOREVER, which was nice. But I upset my partner so much by cutting them, I’ve resisted the urge to cut more. I hope you get some relief from the heat soon. Today was only a few degrees cooler, but without the humidity we have truly enjoyed the day. Best wishes, WG
