John Viccellio retired after 24 years in the U. S. Navy and began to dig into gardening when he could finally land in one place. He completed the Master Gardener course in 1992 and has since designed and constructed two of his own gardens. He wrote a monthly garden column for ten years and was a regular contributor to Carolina Gardener magazine. John published his first book, Guess What's in My Garden!, in 2014.
He lives in a retirement community in Matthews, NC.

Topsail… one of my favorite places in the entire world. My family has gone every year since 1972 up until last year, when Mother’s stroke happened just a few weeks before their trip. They missed last summer and this summer, but my brother and sister have gotten down there. We love the north end of the Island, and Serenity Point is one of my favorite places to visit. So glad to know that you enjoy going there, too. My father always paints when he is there, and has watercolor prints made of all of the major landmarks in various shops on the island. He has painted on Topsail every summer from 1972-2013. A magical place!
