Today is Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day, hosted by Carol at May Dreams Gardens.
I woke up this morning and found a thin sheet of ice on the birdbath. Welcome to fall in my North Carolina garden. The frost was not severe enough, thankfully, to damage any flowers that are still hanging about, so I am able to join Carol in displaying a few of the plants that are still showing bits of color.
Many of the flowers in this post have been included in recent offerings, but these have survived the unusually wet weather and are providing the evidence that the full effect of fall is still a few days away. (Run your mouse over the photos for identification) Camellia ‘Our Linda’ and the Pink Muhly grass are in full bloom.
Hydrangea ‘Endless Summer’ still has a few blossoms and buds. I doubt if the buds will have a chance to open before Mr. Frost gets them in earnest. A surprise are a few blooms on the Carolina jessamin which normally shows its yellow color in spring. My Arranger has had great luck with the purple geranium pot on the front porch.
I have reported on the reblooming iris recently and, while the number of blooms hasn’t been great this fall, just to have any of these beauties now is a plus. The white and yellow ones are about to bloom so I included them in this post. They are not likely to be around in mid December for the next GBBD.
The balance of color now includes Clematis ‘Comptesse de Bouchard’ (the second time this year), pansies that are now going into our winter annual pots, a number of different Encore azaleas, annual climbing vine Mandevilla, and a new (in this garden) daisy ‘Freak’ ( I don’t know where the name came from but I like its form).
Please visit Carol at May Dreams Gardens to what she and others have blooming in their gardens this day.
Beautiful!
Happy Garden Bloggers’ Bloom Day!

Looks great! My first thought on this was I need to consider moving South. The camellias alone would be worth it.

Yes, and you have those lovely hellebores already.

Yes- the Muhly grass is so lovely. I keep thinking I want to try it in some warm spot in our zone 5B garden just for the heck of it…..but I doubt it would make it. Thanks for sharing all the lovely photos for those of us here up north who have so many fewer flowers right now.

Thanks, Marge. Why don’t you just try muhly. Find a warm microclimate. Be careful not to overwater…I’ve lost some that way.

You still have some lovely flowers to enjoy even after a frost – the Clematis and Mandevilla are amazing to look so good in November!

Thank you, Cathy. I got those just in time. The frost this morning took out the mandevilla blossoms.

Lovely, still so much to enjoy in your garden. What a gorgeous Camellia and I love your pink Muhly Grass. And a Mandevilla, I would love to be able to grow it.

Thanks, Chloris. Mandevilla is an annual, a new one of which I plant every t year. You should be able to do likewise.

I dreamed last night, that I bought Pink Muly grass and also did a lot of rock moving and hole digging. No wonder I wake up tired. Now that it has frosted, I have a new set of chores to do in NC. Great post as usual John. Keep up the good work.

Your Pink Muhly grass is wonderful, I have tried it here but it disappeared sadly. I love your Irises, mine still aren’t re-flowering and looking at them yesterday I don’t think they will this year. Is the frost early this year in N. Carolina

This is about the normal beginning of frosty weather here. It will be up and down for awhile yet. I lost some muhly because I overwatered it.
