The theme of this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge is TRANSITION.
We spent the Thanksgiving holiday with my daughter and her family. Much of the food we ate was part of family tradition that goes back over half a century. This year, however, I could not help but notice the transition from my wife’s and my leadership in planning and preparation to that of my daughter and son-in-law. Also of importance in that transition were the roles of our adult granddaughters in making their own versions of family “traditional” holiday dishes and taking the lead on decorations. Seeing our family repeating traditions of our own young days over three generations was heartwarming. It is bittersweet to see that transition taking place. The old guard steps back, and the new steps forward; life goes on.
Transition is also taking place in my garden.
Late last spring the Cornus kousa dogwood was beautiful and covered with white blossoms.
The petals dropped, but the tree remained a solid green presence in the garden.
When fall rolled around, the leaves turned a deep red with some orange tints.
Now the leaves are almost gone. But the kousa goes on. It is putting out a tree full of buds for next spring’s foliage and flowers…a transition from the beauty of this fall to the hope of next spring.

Sounds like a lovely holiday – sad to see the leaves go tho, isn’t it?

Indeed, Tina. But reassuring to know they will return.

Beautiful post, John. It is kind of bittersweet to see the young move forward into adulthood, taking over roles that seem like we took on only a short time ago. We’re all in the process of transitioning…

Thank you, Eliza. The fun part is seeing yourself being repeated in the younger generations.
