For this week’s In a Vase on Monday I had to resort to my reblooming bearded iris ‘Sunny Disposition’ once again, as it is one of the few perennials which has survived our frosty weather. With that being said, I am pleased to present our vase for the week. I apologize to any who may be tired of seeing the “same old iris,” but in truth it is what I have right now.
Tea Olive (Osmanthus fragrans) blossoms
My Arranger suggested the addition of the foliage of the tea olive (Osmanthus fragrans). My two shrubs had been trimmed back several weeks before and, much to our surprise, it is putting out new growth. Its tiny blooms have so far resisted the frost, and, if you get close, you can smell its heavenly fragrance.

I haven’t seen a German Iris in ages, especially as pretty as that one. Tea Olive made me long for home..til I realized it was winter.

I am from Atlanta, spent more than 30 years doing residential landscape design there – there are a lot of perennial I miss and Yuletide Camellias this time of year. However, I do have a lot of new plant friends!

Thanks, Christina. It is amazing, indeed, to still have iris around in December. A good hard frost will end them for the year, but I will keep using them while they last.

What a beautiful Iris, and it’s exciting to see flowers of Osmanthus fragrans. I’ve just planted two and can’t wait for them to flower.

Thank you, Cath. For us, the osmanthus blooms several times. Why now? I have yet to figure out when it’s going to do it after its main blossoming time in the summer.
