John Viccellio retired after 24 years in the U. S. Navy and began to dig into gardening when he could finally land in one place. He completed the Master Gardener course in 1992 and has since designed and constructed two of his own gardens. He wrote a monthly garden column for ten years and was a regular contributor to Carolina Gardener magazine. John published his first book, Guess What's in My Garden!, in 2014.
He lives in a retirement community in Matthews, NC.

Thank you, Susi. I think what you are describing is actually a camellia (green) and a red maple behind it in my neighbor’s yard.

Love the Acer in the last shot – vibrant! Reminds me of my parents garden. ( think that’s what it is😊)

Thanks, Jules. That maple was once a seedling I found in the gutter in front of my house in VA. I put it in a pot, moved it to NC and you can see the results. Kind of a happy ending.

Your gardens make me miss living in town where I don’t have to protect plants from deer, range cattle, and ground squirrels. I’m thinking I can hang some of the kites I’ve recently painted, sort of the way your flags look, around my fenced gardens.

I read about a man in Alaska who used Vick’s VapoRub to keep off the MOOSE.
