Back in February during winter cleanup I began to prune the many heucheras I have in my garden. It is an annual chore that requires close inspection of the plants to identify the new growth. Heuchera villosa ‘Caramel’ looked like this on February 24th after a cold winter:
My goal was to remove all but healthy new growth, largely hidden within the surviving foliage. I used scissors to do the pruning; it facilitated getting down into the plant to cut off old stems as close to the crown as possible. After pruning it looked like this; notice that most of the old growth has been removed.
A bit over two months later ‘Caramel’ is glowing today with vigorous new growth:
It takes about ten to fifteen minutes per plant to do this type of close pruning. I have a number of heucheras in my garden, but I think that these results show that it is worth the effort.
‘Caramel’ responded well to your pruning. Mine didn’t get any cleanup attention this year.

I should invest a little time for mine too – looks like it really pays off!

You are right, Cathy. It does take a bit of time, but I have indeed found it is worth it. And I only do a few at a time over the winter, so it’s not really a burden.

I’ll need to try this, yours looks great! I just finished dividing and transplanting mine, they were beyond trimming but hopefully next year I can give it a try.

The lower leaves tend to die back here over the summer so I keep an eye out and trim them out from time to time…always trying to keep things tidy.

I have one like that waiting for pruning but (at long last) it’s raining.
