I have seven ‘Anthony Waterer’ spirea plants throughout my garden. They are in full bloom now, and it seems appropriate to make them the star of this week’s In a Vase on Monday, hosted by Cathy at Rambling in the Garden.
One of the reasons I like ‘Anthony Waterer’ is that it will give me a full rebloom if I deadhead it. Several years it has even produced a partial third rebloom if we have a late frost. Butterflies and bees seem to love it as well.
My Arranger suggested we add the little lamb to make sure the readers appreciate her kitchen credo.
Please visit Cathy at Rambling in the Garden to see what she and others are sharing from their gardens this week.
John what a fabulous spirea and it reblooms too. The spirea flowers make a perfect vase.

I don’t know much about as my partner does it so beautifully, but I love reading your posts and seeing your pictures. Your enthusiasm really comes across.

Oh, lovely, John – are the blooms as dark as your vase suggests, or is it the true colour we see on the bush?

The color in the vase is true; the ones on the bush vary over time as they fade from a bright pink to softer shades.

The spirea looks lovely as a cut flower.

Thanks, Susie. I “discovered” it when in Chapel HIll and looked for it here when we moved.

It really is the deepest colour – better than any ‘Anthony Waterer’ I’ve ever seen. Either your soil or your green fingers! And looking stunning in your kitchen. I am knee deep in dishes this morning after a dinner party last night, so I totally agree with the Arranger’s philosophy …

Thank you, Cathy. Perhaps that’s why my Arranger suggests that we eat out so often.

This is a revelation John – I have never even thought of cutting Spirea for a vase. I wonder if mine might also reflower… I have no idea what sort they are as they were here when we came. Yours are such a lovely deep pink, and the setting for the photo is ideal to show them off to full effect!

These are Spirea japonicas. I have others (Goldmound, for example) that will also rebloom if deadheaded but not as reliably and to the extent that A Waterer does. You might just try deadheading one of yours. You have nothing to lose because you will just be making them tidy anyway.
