The muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) is now in its blooming glory, so I thought it might be nice to try to capture its beauty in a vase this Monday. I know that the best way to see muhly grass is when it is backlighted by the sun. Photographing it inside just doesn’t do it justice, so I asked my Arranger, after she put the finishing touches on the arrangement, to hold it up out in the garden for the photo.
She added a few blooms of a pink Encore azalea and sprigs from ‘Sunshine’ ligustrum.
The Muhly grass blooms on this clump are as pretty as I can remember.
My thanks go to Cathy Rambling in the Garden for hosting this meme. Please visit her and see what she and others are sharing from their gardens this week.
It is indeed extremely pretty! I have never seen anything like it.

Muhly is a native plant here. It is very widely used now; even the highway department is planting them. They are in bloom all over town and really striking.

Fabulous! I have a new Muhly grass which is struggling to produce just one flower, so I hope it will be as glorious as this one day!

This is my favourite case so far, really stunning combination. I tried this lovely grass here sadly with no success, but if I find it again I will try again; it would be worth the effort.

I took note of your muhly grass last year and found one for my garden this year! Only one tiny branch bloomed this year. I’m afraid it won’t survive a pittsburgh winter – so I’m thinking i will bring it inside and try to overwinter it. Do you cut it back after it blooms?

I cut it back in late winter…usually around February. It keeps its shape in the winter, the seed heads turn brown, and they are quite beautiful all winter long.

Excellent idea to experiment with pink muhly in an arrangement.

Thank you, Susie. I had tried on several occasions this year and last to use muhly. Only when I decided to try to photograph it outside with the sun in back did it turn out to be presentable.
