Weekly Photo Challenge: TRANSMOGRIFY

The theme of this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge is TRANSMOGRIFY.

Talk about a difficult word to play with!

This is the story about the transformation of an everyday object into these two  sculptures. They measure about an inch across. Before you read their story, pause and take a guess about what they are. Then read on.

I inherited an old leaf blower from the previous owner of our home in Falls Church, VA. It was constructed much like a gas powered lawn mower and looked like one. One nice fall afternoon I was blowing leaves off the lawn when the blower caught on fire. I pulled it away from beside my automobile (not a good place for a gasoline fire) and propelled it onto the lawn, away from the house. It turned over and flaming gas leaked out of it. Fortunately there was no explosion, and it burned itself out by the time the Fire Department arrived.

The next day I looked at the site to see what damage might have been done to the lawn, and I spied two shiny objects in the grass. I picked them up, turned them over, brushed away dirt and grass, and saw what you see in these photographs.

Apparently the fire had melted the aluminum manifold of the engine and, as the molten metal fell to the ground, it was transmogrified into two unique sculptures formed by the stubble of grass. They have ever since held a place of honor on my desk.

Your photos and the accompanying story gave us quite a chuckle over breakfast this morning. Not much chance of recycling that into anything else. 🙂

Reminds me of sculptures created by pouring molten aluminum down a large ant colony or the impact of lightning on sand on a beach where a piece of beautiful glass is created.
