The frost over the past few days has turned most of our flowers to a nice shade of brown. The winter pansies and violas are hanging on as expected, but I shall wait to use them in a Monday vase at some future time when my options are reduced.
With the holiday upon us, I thought it might be nice to share some seasonal color for In a Vase on Monday.
The stars of the show are frost free nandina berries from plants I had banished several years ago to the “plant hospital” in the woods to recover. The supporting characters are foliage from Foster holly, aucuba ‘Mr Goldstrike,’ and Cryptomeria japonica. A few mature cryptomeria cones add to the festivities.

I LOVE red berries. I used to collect them while foraging (taking only a few from each patch). I had to wait for a couple of freezing days so I wouldn’t sink in the swampy grass and then I would cut a small handful to enjoy and after the holidays the berries went out on the bird feeders where they quickly disappeared.

Glad you like them. I had to get rid of a lot of nandina because of the berries. They germinate like crazy. A few I moved into the woods and they were the source of my berries. I don’t care a lot if they germinate in the woods.

I had to Google Cryptomeria japonica – Japanese cedar it says. Your sleigh with its greenery and those gorgeous nandina berries is a real seasonal success. Thanks to you and The Arranger for sharing it

This is one of the most beautiful holiday arrangements I’ve seen. Some look haphazard but yours follows the shape of the sleigh and the foliage works well together. Thanks for sharing this!
