In a Vase on Monday: Mr. Goldstrike

You have seen the ‘Debutante’ camellias several times, the hellebores aren’t quite open yet, and I’m saving the pansies when I might be in exremis on a given Monday. For our vase this week, my Arranger suggested we share this simple arrangement of aucuba foliage.

Aucuba japonica ‘Mr. Goldstrike’

img_2234‘Mr. Goldstrike’ is a favorite aucuba, and its lovely foliage has accompanied many of our vases over the years. It has suffered a bit this winter from the icy weather here but is now showing new growth and plenty of flower buds. The flowers are rather insignificant, but the variegation is remarkable.

    I do like the variegated foliage and bought myself a rather small Aucuba last year. In fact I looked at it today but decided against using it as it is still so small!

    And most tastefully arranged too, John. It is a plant many of us have mixed feelings about but the attractiveness of its foliage certainly can’t be disputed – well done to the Arranger for suggesting it for a solo appearance

    Foliage is often undeservedly relegated to the supporting role, your arranger was very clever to suggest using the Aucuba as the star.
