I missed In a Vase on Monday last week (I do hope that Cathy at Rambling in the Garden will forgive me); busyness gets the best of me sometime. However, I will try to make up this week by sharing two vases, both of which feature irises in bloom now in the garden.
The irises are Iris sibirica ‘Caesar’s Brother’ and bearded iris ‘Clarence.’ The supporting cast include Salvia nemerosa ‘May Night’ and Virburnum plicata var tomentosa ‘Summer Snowflake.’
The second simple vase includes an encore with ‘Clarence’ and ‘Summer Snowflake.’
Please visit Cathy at Rambling in the Garden to see what she is sharing this week. There are many beautiful vases out there, and we are grateful to Cathy for thinking of this grand idea.
There is nothing like fresh flowers to brighten a home, especially flowers from one’s own gardens. Have a wonderful week.

Delightful! The pretty viburnum is a lovely companion for those irises – I especially like Clarence. 🙂

Thanks, Cathy. That viburnum is nice in that it continues to bloom sporadically over the summer. Clarence is a good friend indeed.

Oh those iris colors are gorgeous John. ‘Summer Snowflake’ is great addition.

I learned about Summer Snowflake from Suzanne Edney, a garden designer in your area, from whom I took a design course lo these many years ago.

Firstly John, Congratulations on your 500th post, I’m sorry I didn’t have time to comment but life has been rather hectic in the last couple of weeks. Love your Irises which are beautifully arranged. My irises are also just beginning in the garden so across many miles we are enjoying the same things at the same time.

Thank you, Christina. Iris time is fun time…and so many of mine rebloom I just wish the siberians did as well. Of course, we have to count the blessings we have, not the ones we don’t.

I love the restrained choice of two hues in their varying tones. That deep purple iris is a stunner (and I am getting a sense that I have made similar comments on its loveliness in previous years!)

Thanks for your kind comment. I agree with you about the deep purple siberian. It’s a stunner, yes, and a winner.

Clarence’s pure white really brings out the gorgeous shades of your irises, John – such a great contrast. Reblooming irises sound a good idea – which type do that?

Thank you, Cathy. We have a number of reblooming (remontant) bearded iris cultivars available now. I have three cultivars in my garden and they reliably rebloom. They also multiply quite fast. I should divide them every three years for sure, and sometimes even two. Wonderful to share. I’ve been growing them here in NC for about fifteen years.

ONe more thought: the white is from the Virbunum, not from Clarence which is the bi-color bearded iris.

Oh stupid me, John – I do read every word of your posts, honest, but must have got distracted when I read through the comments 😉

What a treat – lots of blues (that Iris sibirica is a truly luscious colour, isn’t it?). But in spite of the glory of the irises, the really pretty stalwart there was ‘Summer Snowflake’ – and it does this on and off during the summer?

It does put out new growth all summer that blooms, but the amount is greatly reduced through the heat of summer here. There is always a touch of white on the shrub all season, but again not nearly so full as spring.

Such a wonderful thing John, even given your practical advice! Hurrah for ‘Summer Snowflake’!
