The theme of this week’s WordPress Weekly Photo Challenge is TEXTURES.
I saw this old fence up in the mountains of North Carolina. I think it does a good job of demonstrating the different textures of three varieties of lichens against the warn patina of the weathered wood of the old fence.

John Viccellio retired after 24 years in the U. S. Navy and began to dig into gardening when he could finally land in one place. He completed the Master Gardener course in 1992 and has since designed and constructed two of his own gardens. He wrote a monthly garden column for ten years and was a regular contributor to Carolina Gardener magazine. John published his first book, Guess What's in My Garden!, in 2014.
He lives in a retirement community in Matthews, NC.
A Walk in the Garden 
Beautiful. Cladonia cristatella with the red caps is commonly called British Soldier Lichen, for the color worn by invading troops during the American Revolution. The caps are actually the sexually fruiting structure of the lichen. (Maybe one of three facts I remember from the SC Master Naturalist course, ha!)

I’ve never seen such gorgeous lichen. I love to photograph lichen but I’ve never seen these varieties before.
