I remember a song from years ago that began with the words “Lavender Blue Dilly Dilly.” It made the rounds on the radio, and I never did understand the “dilly dilly” part. As I walked through my garden on this cool, rain soaked morning, I found my self humming that tune from long ago.
Could it be that I was seeing so much lavender in my garden this morning?
Let me share the various shades of lavender blue that had me humming:
This fall’s first pansies and reblooming hydrangea ‘Endless Summer,’ a bug eaten clematis ‘Ramona,’ and my heirloom chaste tree.
Society garlic has been in bloom continuously since spring.
I’m delighted that you joined me and hope you are humming along…”Lavender blue, dilly dilly”
Beautiful photos today. Thanks.

I haven’t heard that song in years and years. Funny how a long forgotten tune will pop into your mind.

I don’t have a lot of lavender in my garden, but where it is it adds a nice contrast to my pinks.

Berl Ives sung it in a Disney film, 1949; Long time ago. Perfect song for your Fall garden.

Didn’t realize bearded iris would bloom in fall – it’s a beauty, in any case.

Thank you, Jason. I have several reblooming irises in my garden. See my next post. They have been around for at least 15 years or so (I had them in my Chapel Hill garden). As far as I know they will grow anywhere the normal German bearded iris will.

Sounds like you had a fun stroll 🙂
That color looks great at this time of year, your lucky to be able to enjoy the pansies all winter, and the iris is awesome!

Our annual pansies and violas usually do well over the winter, even after ice, etc. I’ve had the iris bloom in early December, but they do not like a frost. it killeth.

Beautiful garden, John! Yes, I remember hearing that song on the radio. Probably BBC Children’s Hour, back in the 50’s.
