It’s time once again for another Vase to share for Cathy’s meme, In a Vase on Monday, for which we are asked to share something from our current garden each week. Last week I complained about their being so little left in my garden to include, and this week is not much better. I was, however, able to locate a single ‘Debutante’ Camellia japonica that made it through the frost unscathed. Using the simple silver vase and tray and adding the purple pansy were, of course, my Arranger’s contributions.
The limited flowers right now suggested that a simple arrangement might be best to take advantage of what is available. The silver bud vase has been in the family for several generations, and the tray was a wedding gift. My Arranger even polished them for the photograph. How nice is that? The greenery is foliage from a very happy ‘Green Giant’ arborvitae. The small glittery balls are included to remind us of the approaching holiday season.

This is lovely John, its harder to create a simple stylish arrangement when there is so little in flower. Lovely connection to with your bud vase and tray.

Is C. japonica much less hardy than C. sasanqua?

Both of them are hardy in this zone 7b; in general, the sasanquas bloom fall on and japonicas usually don’t start until February. My Debutante (japonica) is clearly blooming earlier than I expected and a friend tells me the same thing. You might want to check on Camellia Forest Nursery in Chapel Hill to get a better handle than I can provide across species.
